I recently replaced an Ipad 2 screen and noticed the power/sleep/wake button allows me to power down the Ipad, but I am not able to put it in sleep/standby mode. I was able to do a reset by holding down the home and power button, but no luck putting the Ipad in standby mode. Because I am able to power down, doesn’t that mean the button is actually working? Is there something in the software that recognizes it has a single click versus a hold down? I tried restoring via itunes with no luck either. I am right now relying on the auto lock feature to put it in sleep mode, but was curious if anyone had seen this issue before. The iPad won’t even go to lock screen through assistive touch.
I know how to fix this! All you need to do is got to Settings > General > Lock / Unlock and switch it off. It sucks that you can’t use the magnetic cover but if you don’t have one its not an issue. Hope this helps :)
Is this iPad 2 or iPad mini?
jessabethany I’m having the same problem with an ipad 2 replaced the screen en power and volume cable’s. The power button is only working when you turn the divice on or off, locking the screen issent possible olso tried by assistive touch, it won’t work… Can you please help me finding an answer to this problem ? p.s. Another strange issue is when the divece is turned on, the apple logo come’s on and normally after the apple logo desepears you automatticly see the startscreen, in this case the screen stays black after the apple logo desepears untill you push the home button, could this issue have to do with te powerbutton problem ? thx
I recently had my daughter ipadmini fixed and then the sleep wake button didnt work…turns out it automatically turned itself off during the repair…try going to settings, click general, scroll down to sleep/wake lock…and turn it off..worked for me!
I was working on an ipad mini with the same problem today. I opened it up and cover all the components on the home flex cable. that solved the problem.
you open your ipad take off the digitizer and use the smart cover and it will lock and the turn off on will come and reconnect it set it off and you ipad will lock with button not with cover hopes it helps you ;3
I also have the same problem Does button associated with the menu button in because I fallow now stripped screen touch and when experience lock screen button does not work, but when pressed for a period, whether it when installing screen new Touch will work fallow button with the menu button and thank you
but a better solution is a replacement of the home flex, or replacement of the whole digitizer assembly. but it will be expensive for its ipad mini retina

I had the exact same problem the other week. For me it wouldn’t lock even with the glass away from the frame, so knew it wasn’t a grounding issue. Plugged another digitiser in, and it worked. As I need to practice my soldering, I just sent the defective part back. If you have covered all the contacts on this new screen to know it can’t be this, and you still have the original screen, just plug it in to eliminate the part/ipad at fault. someone mentioned before it’s something to do with sleep function which goes through the home flex cable. Good luck.
Hello to everyone! I have a secon hand ipad 4. The previous owner changed the screen and the touchpad. I also have the same problem about the standby mode with the hardware button and also with the software button. I didn’t find the lock/unlock function in general menu. Someone can help me?
