I have an iMac Pro here with a defective SSD. Apple is selling Mac Pro 2019 SSDs on their website, and they look identical to the ones in the iMac Pro. I also found an eBay seller listing the Mac Pro 2019 SSD as compatible with the iMac Pro. So based on those two very reliable sources, I tried installing a 2TB set in the iMac Pro. The Mac is completely unresponsive. It can be found in DFU mode, but when I try to restore it using Apple Configurator I get the error: Gave up waiting for device to transition from RestoreOS state to BootedOS State. [com.apple.MobileDevice.MobileRestore – 0xFA5 (4005)] So this post is just to inform people who might get the same idea. Edit: it turns out they most likely ARE compatible, and that if you have this error, you simply need to swap the left and right SSD.
It worked for me with Apple’s 8TB Mac Pro Upgrade Kit. It worked fine but I had to choose restore, not revive in the Apple Configurator and it eventually booted to a folder with a flashing question mark, it did take awhile so be patient. Then I just booted with Command + R and installed a fresh install of Big Sur. Now I have a iMac pro with 8TB’s of internal storage! It’s a bit old but still worthwhile! Plus it’s using an Apple part so I feel good about that.
