Okay, here’s the problem. The logic board in my girlfriend’s early 2011 MacBook Pro died, as I know that era of logic board often does (green stripes on screen, slow, crashing, etc). In my research about it I discovered that a few people had replaced the logic board in their 2011 MacBook Pro bodies with a mid 2012 logic board, which is apparently less predisposed to failure. So that’s what I did with hers, and it was straight plug and play other than a small easily modified difference on the display plug. After doing that, I wiped her hard drive and reinstalled the os, and the laptop literally works better than ever since the logic board is newer and more powerful. HOWEVER, occasionally (1/5 times maybe) when the lid on the computer is closed it completely crashes and even the power button does nothing. All of the battery lights will stay lit, even for hours, and the mag safe plug shows green (sometimes it’s dim, sometimes it’s bright). I’ve tried SMC and PRAM resets when the computer is functioning, but I can’t do them when it becomes unresponsive because as I said the power button does nothing. If I unplug the battery and reconnect it, the computer starts up the moment I connect the mag safe and acts normally again. Are the other people who have done this logic board swap crazy and it doesn’t actually work? It seems like it should since as far as I can tell all of the components other than the logic board are identical, and it functions well when it doesn’t crash upon being closed. Did I simply receive a faulty mid 2012 logic board? Did some other component happen to fail at the same time that I replaced the logic board? Figuring this out is made more stressful by the impending 30 day warranty on the logic board I bought, and I don’t want to get stuck with it if it’s the problem. Any help would be wonderful, thanks.
I’m currently running on such a system! So we aren’t crazy ;-} Sounds like the battery checker & sensor cable is bad or you have a bad logic board. Lets hope its just the checker 922-9033 - MacBook Pro 15" Battery Indicator Board
