If you get a kernel panic than it is either a software problem, the operating system has gone corrupt, or it could be a hardware issue. If it is hardware then it is most likely either the hard drive or the SATA cable, the cable that gives power to and reads your hard drive. “Hardware”
- Try booting up into recovery mode(⌘+R) and selecting the disk utility option. If you can see your hard drive listed here than it is most likely the SATA cable that needs replacing.
- I would recommend buying a SATA to USB 3.0 adapter (goo.gl/MfMYjw). You will then need to remove your hard drive (goo.gl/aZBP9i). Then take your hard drive and connect it to your adapter which is plugged into your Mac by USB. Power on your MacBook and then hold down the “option” key. You will then be treated to a boot menu, select your drive. If your drive boots normally from here you will need to replace your SATA cable. Tutorial - (goo.gl/ZJY8Jk)
- For the specific part, you will need to find the year of your MacBook and then search “year” MacBook Pro SATA cable replacement. These are pretty cheap, around $15.
- If it is your hard drive, you will simply need to buy a new one, or this could be an opportunity for an SSD upgrade if you have a bit of money to spare. (goo.gl/fZxbKt)
- If none of these work, then it is 100% a software issue. “Software” The way to test if this is a software issue is by first trying to reinstall the OS. This can be done by using the disks that came with your MacBook, or by turning on your Mac, and then holding down ⌘+R and then selecting reinstall. If none of these solutions work then I would recommend taking it to the Apple store
Not good ;-{ Your drive is corrupted or going bad. Do you have an external bootable drive (HD/SSD or thumb drive)? You’ll need to boot up your system from it to try to fix your drive (or at least backup any important files first). If you don’t have a means to boot up your system externally you’ll need to create one. I would recommend getting s USB thumb drive and asking a friend who has a Mac to prep it up so its bootable. Then copy over to it the OS installer that is workable on your system. Once you have that in hand you should be able to boot up under it and then run disk Utility to try to fix your drive. If that fails you’ll need to try to reformat the disk and re-install the OS. If that fails its time for a new drive. When you get to that point let us know so we can help you decide whats the best replacement drive.
