Hi, I have an old (mid-2008) white macbook that has been going strong until now. I noticed that the battery had swollen so removed it and tried to boot up just with the power cable but nothing happened. I ordered a replacement battery and it is charging fine but the macbook still won’t boot. It turns on briefly, I here some whirring inside, what sounds like the cd drive making a noise and the white led comes on for a few seconds, then a click and off it goes. I’ve tried numerous reset options…holding cmd, option, P, R etc. and power button 30 secs but still nothing. Is there anything else I can try or is it fried as I suspect?

Remove the battery and disconnect the mag-safe; press and hold the power button for 5 seconds. Put battery back in and connect mag-safe and see if it will power up.

Some generations of the Macbook will not turn on without a battery. You may simply just need to put a new battery in.

I had the same issue before where I would hear the laptop turn on, battery is working, but no display. I took it too the apple store and the Genius Guy said that the display was disconnected, probably from when i was working on my laptop. My suggestion is to take it to the apple store and say that your macbook wont turn on.
