I built a computer back in the year 2000. It work just fine then. I set it away for a couple of years, but now it just shows a screen of system information. the keyboard freezes when plugged into all USB and PS/2 ports. I figured it is the hard drive that either failed or is frozen or just some how wiped all my data? Please help.
Hi @pcrestorer1998 , What is the make and model number of the motherboard? Check that the RTC battery voltage is OK as the battery may be depleted and the BIOS settings may have become corrupted preventing a normal POST or startup. The RTC battery is usually a CR2032 coin cell battery on the motherboard. If <2.6V DC replace it. Disconnect the power from the PC and then remove the RTC battery (note the orientation, usually +ve is on top) and then press and hold the Power On button for 30 seconds then release, to reset the BIOS to default values. Reinsert the RTC battery, (see note above), reconnect the power to the PC and try to start the PC and check what happens. There may be an error message about incorrect date and time on startup but this is normal because the RTC battery was removed (RTC = Real Time Clock)
